This article examines a possible Chinese semiconductor industry’s merger and acquisition in 2017, the year before the Sino-US trade war and US high-tech sanctions against China. The feasibility of a merger between Tsinghua Unigroup and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is thoroughly examined as well as their development history and the current financial standing. The financial data collected form the two companies’ annual report was analyzed using multiple corporate valuating models. We discovered that the industrial policy and financial reports in 2017 favored the merger, but the combination ultimately collapsed, which was quite a pity for Chinese chip sector. The research contributes to an in-depth comprehension of China’s semiconductor business and serves as a model for future financial analyses of comparable sectors.

This article analyzes the resilience of the high-tech regions Eindhoven (the Netherlands) and Hsinchu (Taiwan). In both cases understanding the challenges ahead formed a driving force for their governments, to build and strengthen the knowledge structure, stimulate regional cooperation, and boost new activities. Distinctive local capabilities, a strong network culture with local and global linkages, and a business supportive government contributed to the resilience albeit in different ways. We illustrate how actors' decisions and strategy were affected by nonregional relations and subsequently influenced the extra-regional network structure. The added value of taking an historical as well as an agency perspective, and of comparing and connecting resilient regions in different national contexts as well as in in different phases of economic development is shown. This may contribute to the debate on the conceptualisation of regional economic resilience, regarding theoretical questions concerning the type of shocks and responses to these shocks.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find effective methods of loop analysis of multi‐branch and multi‐node non‐linear circuits using a singular formulation.Design/methodology/approachThe classical loop analysis and the loop analysis using a singular formulation have been compared. The non‐linear systems of equations have been considered and iterative procedures of solving non‐linear equations have been applied. Special attention has been paid to the Newton‐Raphson method combined with successive over relaxation and incomplete Cholesky conjugate gradient methods. The convergence of the methods has been discussed.FindingsIt has been shown that in the case of the loop analysis of non‐linear circuits it is not necessary to form fundamental loops. The system of loop equations with a singular coefficient matrix can be successfully solved iteratively. Using a singular formulation one of the infinitely many solutions can be found quicker than the only one resulting from a classical method with a non‐singular coefficient matrix. Therefore, in the case of the analysis of multi‐branch and multi‐node non‐linear circuits using iterative methods, it is beneficial to introduce superfluous loops. This results in more economical computation and faster convergence.Originality/valueThe presented methods of solving multi‐branch and multi‐node non‐linear circuits using a singular formulation are universal and may be successfully applied both in circuit analysis and the FE analysis using edge elements for non‐linear problems with a large number of unknowns.
