Circadian Functioning and Quality of Life in Substance Use Disorder Patients With and Without Comorbid Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract: Aim: Although a relationship between circadian disruption and development of several psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and substance use disorder (SUD), has been observed, knowledge on this area is scarce yet. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the circadian functioning and quality of life (QOL) in SUD patients with and without comorbid MDD, two highly prevalent clinical entities with difficult therapeutic management. Methods: One hundred sixty-three male patients under treatment… Show more

“…Future studies should investigate the various effects that different drugs may have on life satisfaction and SHR. Finally, illegal drug use is typically accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities and substance use disorders [e.g., ( 30 , 31 )]. However, they were not controlled in the model.…”

“…Iman Hashemzadeh et al conducted a survey that supports this view. They found that patients with comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) experienced more early awakening, poorer sleep quality, and worse quality of life compared to patients with SUD alone [ 38 ]. A recent study has suggested that REM sleep plays a role in preventing emotional overreaction through somatodendritic decoupling, which can help dissolve negative emotions such as fear and stress [ 39 ].…”

“…Circadian function has been implicated in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases through a number of potential mechanisms [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. Mental illnesses can be understandably complex, however, there is growing evidence of associations between these conditions and circadian dysfunction as well [ 38 , 39 , 40 ], which could possibly be mediated by altered sleep behaviour [ 38 ]. Additionally, disruption of circadian function through light exposure has long been considered in seasonal behavioural disorders [ 41 ].…”
