Ciprofloxacin conjugated to diphenyltin(iv): a novel formulation with enhanced antimicrobial activity

Abstract: The stereoisomer Δ-cis-[Ph2Sn(CIP)2] (CIPTIN) was obtained from ciprofloxacin and DPTC. CIPTIN exhibits stronger activity than that of ciprofloxacin against Gram positive or negative bacteria.

“…9). 116 Compounds 15 and 16 showed better antibacterial activity than ciprofloxacin against Gram-positive (S. aureus and E. faecalis), and Gram-negative (K. pneumoniae, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and P. mirabilis) strains. Likewise, diphenyltin complex 17 was more active than its constituents (ciprofloxacin and diphenyl dichloride) against S. aureus and S. epidermidis as well as against E. coli and P. aeruginosa strains.…”

“…Thus, a bactericidal agent that kills 99.9% of the microorganisms shows MBC/MIC value is ≤2. On the contrary, in the case of a bacteriostatic agent, which inhibits but not kills the organism, the MBC/MIC value is ≥4 [5,[8][9][13][14][15]27]. The MBC/MIC values for AGGLY, AGU and AGSAL the tested microbes lie in the range of 1.10 to 1.52 which classified them in the bactericidal ones (Table 1).…”

“…The MBC values, which are the lowest concentration of the antibacterial agents that kills the 99.9% of the initial bacterial inoculums, were determined for AGGLY and AGU [5,[8][9][13][14][15]27]. The MBC values of AGSAL were determined previously [13].…”

“…A prominent element in anti-bacterial research is tin, usually present as an organometallic species, and a comprehensive review of the potential of these compounds as anti-bacterial agents has appeared [33]. In recent years, a broad range of synthetic organotin compounds have been investigated it his context including those of dithiocarbamates [34], hydroxamates [35], thiosemicarbazones [36] and, especially, carboxylates [37,38], sometimes derived from organic anti-bacterial agents, such as Ciprofloxacin [39]. The carboxylates chosen in the present study are derived from the symmetric cage compound adamantane, which is, as mentioned above, lipophilic in nature.…”
