Cinnamomum burmanini Blume increases bone turnover marker and induces tibia's granule formation in ovariectomized rats

Abstract: BackgroundBone fragility and an increase in susceptibility to fracture osteoporosis is characterized by a reduction in bone mass and the micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue. There is no previous study regarding the effect of Cinnamomum burmanini Blume on osteoporosis.ObjectiveThis study was aimed to investigate the effect of C. burmanini Blume on bone turnover marker, mineral elements, and mesostructure of ovariectomized rats.Materials and methodsThirty female Wistar rats were randomly divided int… Show more

“…In addition, the presence of thyme and rosemary in the diet had a positive effect on the increase in the level of calcium and vitamin D3 in plasma, improvement of bone mineral density, and protection against oxidative stress [ 66 ]. In another study, Kania et al demonstrated normalization of bone turnover markers (including C-telopeptide collagen type I and osteocalcin) in ovariectomized rats treated with Cinnamomum burmanini Blume extract [ 67 ]. Essential oils are a mixture of substances with a wide spectrum of biological activity.…”

“…Kania et al [ 48 ] found that cinnamon increased the levels of bone turnover markers in ovariectomized rats and induced the granular shape of the tibia. Lee et al proved that cinnamon bark extract increases the viability of MC3T3-E1 cells and ALP activity and that it inhibits the production of IL-6 and nitric oxide in the presence of TNF-α, indicating it can stimulate bone formation in vitro and prevent osteoporosis and inflammatory bone diseases [ 49 ].…”

“…In-vitro and animal studies have shown that cinnamon can also affect bone metabolism in two ways: 1) Increased production and activity of osteoblasts, and 2) Inhibit the production and activity of osteoclasts by reducing the expression of the NFATc1 gene (a transcription factor) in the RANKL signaling pathway ( 41 , 42 ).…”
