Cigarette Smoking and the Risk of Incident Gout in a Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Objective Cigarette smoking is shown to reduce serum urate. However its impact on risk of gout is unknown. We examined the relationship between cigarette smoking and gout risk prospectively examined in this Asian cohort. Methods We analyzed the data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a cohort of 63,257 Chinese aged 45–74 years at recruitment in 1993–98. Information on cigarette smoking and other lifestyle factors was collected through in-person interview at recruitment. This analysis included 53,213 pa… Show more

“…The explanation here could be similar to that for alcohol usage -it is possible that after diagnosis, patients quit smoking. However, there are studies that have demonstrated similar results to our observation regarding active smoking (Gee Teng et al, 2016). In analyses of male cohorts, ex-smoking was found to be associated with higher concentrations of serum urate and higher prevalence of hyperuricemia compared to current smoking .…”

“…In the Framingham study, a high BMI has been observed in patients with gout 23. In addition to obesity, life style factors, including alcohol intake and smoking, were prevalent in the gout group 24–26. Associations between these factors and CRC have been well documented in epidemiological studies 27 28.…”

“…37,59 Some evidence has demonstrated that smoking reduced serum UA levels. 36,60,61 So smoking may be a potential confounder for the relationship between serum UA and schizophrenia risk. Considering the confounding effects, we removed those SNPs associated with smoking as well as associated with UA and schizophrenia, and the causal relationship between Figure 2 Genetic risk score GRS UA for schizophrenia.…”
