Cigarette smoke induced neural tube defects by down‐regulating noggin expression

Abstract: Background Maternal smoking or passive smoking during gestation increases the risk of congenital birth defects, including neural tube defects (NTDs). Cigarette smoke is a recognized teratogen that causes NTDs, although the mechanisms are not well understood. Methods An established model of passive smoking in pregnant golden hamsters was used to observe the effect of cigarette smoke on neural tube development using scanning electron microscopy. Level of noggin expression in placenta and neural tube was evaluate… Show more

“…Apoptosis, a useful process by which the body gets rid of damaged cells and encourages proper development, can be triggered by responding to the genetic material damage [41,42]. However, we discovered that the improper activation of apoptosis grew progressively with higher CSE concentration in the experimental and bioinformatics data, which is consistent with the facts that CSE chemicals greatly heighten cell death and harm the potential for embryonic development [43][44][45]. Therefore, cell apoptosis is now considered to be a major progress impairing embryonic development rather than merely a mechanism for correcting genetic material damage.…”

“…The finding was corroborated by studies carried out elsewhere 152–154. The plausible explanation related to this could be the fact that both habits (ie, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol) have the potential to severely compromise the regulation mechanism of various genes in the neurulation process 155 156. Moreover, heavy alcohol use during pregnancy impairs the transportation of folic acid 157.…”

“…Some sections were stained by immunohistoch-emistry (IHC). The IHC used was performed using Envision IHC kit (Gene Tech, Shanghai, China, GK600505) as described previously [ 14 ]. Briefly, endogenous peroxidase was blocked by hydrogen peroxide and methanol, and the antigens were retrieved by microwave heat-induced epitope retrieval method in citrate acid buffer (pH 6.0).…”
