Ciclosporin therapy is associated with minimal changes in calcium metabolism in dogs with atopic dermatitis

Abstract: This study indicates that ciclosporin has minimal impact on calcium metabolism in dogs with atopic dermatitis when used at the licensed and clinically effective dosage for 6 weeks.

“…In addition, a higher serum iPTH level was found in CsA users who also received low-dose GC. These results were consistent with those reported by Kovalik et al [38], who showed a significantly increased serum iPTH level in atopic dogs undergoing CsA therapy. Despite this consistency, we have found an inverse correlation between serum iPTH and the cumulative dose of GC (r=−0.299, p=0.011), suggesting that GC and CsA are reciprocally antagonizing each other in their interaction with iPTH.…”

“…Despite this, there are no published descriptions of altered bone density or an increased risk of fractures in atopic dogs. In one study, 16 atopic dogs treated with 4.4‐6.0 mg/kg ciclosporin every 24 hours for six weeks showed no significant changes in serum concentrations of plasma total and ionised calcium, phosphate, creatinine, 25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)2D, or urinary fractional excretion of calcium and phosphate (Kovalik and others 2012). Mean plasma PTH concentrations significantly increased following ciclosporin treatment, but the proportion of dogs with plasma PTH levels above the reference range was similar before and after treatment.…”

“…One of the most popular thus far has been an intact immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) (Allegro Intact PTH; Nichols Institute Diagnostics) fully validated for use in dogs (Torrance & Nachreiner ,). However, this assay, other similar intact PTH IRMAs and non‐isotopic assays (Intact PTH; Diagnostic Products Corporation; Intact PTH; Diagnostic Systems Laboratory and Liaison iPTH; DiaSorin) previously used in dogs (Gow et al , , Kovalik et al ,, Selting et al , Young & Backus ) are no longer available.…”
