Ciclo reproductivo del molusco Atrina maura (Pterioidea: Pinnidae) en un sistema lagunar costero, al sur del Pacífico tropical mexicano

Abstract: Reproductive cycle of the mollusk Atrina maura (Pterioidea: Pinnidae) in a coastal lagoon system of the Mexican South Pacific. From February 1997 to February 1998, random samples of the mollusk Atrina maura were collected on a monthly basis from the Corralero-Alotengo lagoon system, Oaxaca, Mexico. The soft parts were separated from the valve, washed in situ, and placed in a Davison solution. The gonadosomatic index (GSi) and the muscle yield index (MYi) were measured, and the reproductive cycle was characteri… Show more

“…In this case, the continuous gametogenetic activity observed in A. maura females (evidenced by the presence of oocytes in different developmental stages together with growing oocytes at the periphery of acini in spawning individuals) precluded a finer classification of specimens into intermediate reproductive stages (early activity, development and late activity). This phenomenon had already been reported to occur in this species, both in wild individuals (Ángel-Pérez et al 2007) and in specimens reared or conditioned in the laboratory (Rodríguez-Jaramillo et al 2001).…”

“…The available information on Atrina maura mainly deals with the standardization of culturing techniques (Cardoza-Velasco and Maeda-Martínez 1997) and reproductive aspects in cultured organisms or under laboratory conditions (Rodríguez-Jaramillo et al 2001, Enríquez-Díaz et al 2003. In contrast, few investigations have been carried out on natural populations (Soria 1989, Ahumada-Sempoal et al 2002, Ángel-Pérez et al 2007, Ángel-Dapa et al 2010.…”

“…Nutritional indices.-Nutritional indices have been used to assess the nutritional status of fish (Bolger and Connolly, 1989), bivalve molluscs (Crosby and Gale, 1990;Angel-Pérez et al, 2007) and gastropods (Zetina et al, 2000;Abidli et al, 2012), among others. In gastropods, the condition index has been used to evaluate the condition of Melongena corona (Zetina et al, 2000) and Bolinus brandaris (Abidli et al, 2012) in relation to the reproductive cycle, since it is deemed a good indicator of the maturity state because of the use of muscle and digestive gland reserves in gametogenesis (Webber and Giese, 1969).…”

Angel-Pérez et al (2007) used a muscle yield index and related it to the gonadal development stages in the bivalve Atrina maura. These authors found an inverse relationship, i.e.…”

“…This prevents more concentrated harvests of one sex over the other that otherwise could potentially harm the reproductive viability of the species if they were to be spatially differentiated by sex. Finally, pen shells rapid growth and sexual maturation rate at one year of age (Angel-Pérez et al, 2007), result in that more than 70% of the harvests in the Infiernillo Channel are more than one year old (Basurto, 2008), indicating that most of them have already spawned at least once before being harvested. In sum, the presence of eelgrass meadows and the particularities of the reproductive characteristics of the species harvested, make reasonable to think that biological and ecological factors might be able to provide resilience to the Seri fishery for longer periods of time, than in other settings where biological and ecological conditions might be entirely different.…”
