Sub palliolo sordido è una sorta di 'frammento di frammento': è parte di una sentenza di Cecilio Stazio -il poeta che nel canone di Volcacio Sedigito deteneva la palma di miglior comico latino -nota attraverso le Tusculanae disputationes di Cicerone. Nella formulazione originale -saepe est etiam sub palliolo sordido sapientia -il motivo è quello della saggezza nascosta sotto un' apparenza squallida, ma tra lacerti e mutili brandelli -appunto, sub palliolo sordido -si cela anche una parte consistente del patrimonio della commedia antica». Così l' amico e collega Francesco Lubian ha spiegato il titolo del convegno che si è tenuto (virtualmente) a Padova nei giorni 15-16 ottobre 2021 e che mi ha aiutato ad organizzare insieme ad altri due amici e colleghi, Antonella Duso e Giuseppe Eugenio Rallo. L' iniziativa, promossa dal Dipartimento di Studi linguistici e letterari dell' Università di Padova, è stata patrocinata anche dal Dipartimento di Scienze storiche, geografiche e dell' antichità dello stesso Ateneo, dalla School of Classics della University of St. Andrews e dalla Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften. In questo volume, che porta lo stesso titolo del convegno e che raccoglie tutte le relazioni presentate in quell' occasione, sono stati accolti anche i lavori di altri studiosi, che hanno contribuito ad arricchire scenari e prospettive di indagine sui frammenti della commedia greca e latina.L' idea, che ha ispirato questa iniziativa, è nata nell' ambito della mia collaborazione al progetto "Kommentierung der Fragmente der griechischen Komödie (KomFrag)", diretto dal professor Bernhard Zimmermann della Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Lavorando al commento di alcuni frammenti di commedie di Menandro, e in particolare delle Synaristosai, mi sono confrontato con diversi aspetti problematici: 1) il rapporto con altri testi comici greci precedenti rispetto alla tradizionale periodizzazione della commedia greca in tre fasi di sviluppo ("commedia antica", "commedia di mezzo" e "commedia nuova") in termini di continuità e discontinuità; 2) i problemi nell' interpretazione delle fonti, che talvolta sono anche in lingua latina come la Naturalis Historia di Plinio il Vecchio; 3) le analogie e le differenze rispetto alla Cistellaria di Plauto, ormai riconosciuta come una rielaborazione delle Synaristosai menandree.Al di là dei confini disciplinari, questa silloge intende valorizzare gli elementi di contiguità fra gli studi sulla commedia frammentaria greca e sulla commedia frammentaria latina. Una simile prospettiva non è in sé rivoluzionaria: ad esempio, nel 1985 Richard Hunter pubblicava un libro dal significativo titolo The New Comedy of Greece & Rome, che è qui ripreso nella seconda sezione. Pur senza perdere di vista le specificità che contraddistinguevano gli spettacoli comici in Grecia e a Roma 1 , 1 Ad esempio nell' uso del coro e nella divisione in atti, vd. pp. 37-38.

“…De Saint-Denis calls the Pro Caelio the wittiest of Cicero's orations, 73 which results to a great extent from the date when the speech was delivered (on 4 th April), from the maximum exploitation of the somewhat contradictory situation provided by the fi rst day of the Ludi Megalenses through the tools of humour. 74 Ludi Megalenses (4-10 April) was the festivity of Magna Mater (Kybelē), whose cult was borrowed and introduced in Rome in 205/4 immediately before the end of the second Punic war on the grounds of the instruction of the libri Sibyllini. 75 At that time, they turned to the seat of the cult, 76 in the present case, to Attalos, king of Pergamon, who handed over the black stone representing the goddess, and equipped a ship for carrying it to Rome.…”

Abstract. The present paper intends to highlight some aspects of Cicero's speech in defence of Marcus Caelius Rufus on 4 April 56 BC on the fi rst day of the Ludi Megalenses. In 56 BC, as a result of peculiar coincidence of political and private relations, Cicero was given the opportunity to deal a heavy blow on Clodius and Clodia in his Pro Caelio, whom he mocked in the trial with murderous humour using the means of Roman theatre, and, thus, arranged a peculiar theatre performance during the Megalensia, which anyway served as the time of the Ludi scaenici. After outlining the circumstances of the lawsuit (I.) and the background of the Bona Dea case that sowed the seeds of the confl ict between Cicero and the gens Clodia (II.) in our paper we intend to analyse the rhetoric situation provided by the Ludi Megalenses and genially exploited by Cicero (III.) and the orator's tactics applied in the speech in defence of Caelius (IV.).
