“…In addition, Other Micronesians may lack trust in the healthcare system due to historical and systemic issues of mistreatment and lack of access to healthcare. Hattori-Uchima [ 19 ] reported that Other Micronesians on Guam, Chuukese in particular, had difficulty obtaining the healthcare they needed due to financial concerns, communication issues, and mistrust; they tend to not seek preventive healthcare services. Several studies have shown that Micronesian migrants often identify feelings of mistrust related to negative experience with healthcare workers [ 19 ], and feelings of mistreatment and discrimination when seeking help from health, education, and public welfare agencies [ 20 ].…”

“…In this analysis, we treated ethnicity (non-CHamoru Micronesians or Micronesians from the Freely Associated States = 1 and other = 0) as the independent variable, all study variables as dependent variables, and age, gender, and SES as covariates entered simultaneously. We then used Mplus 8.6 with maximum likelihood estimation (Muthén & Muthén, 1998-2017 to analyze the indirect effects of ethnicity on betel nut use through the proposed mediators (familiarity, access, and normative beliefs). Model fit was assessed based on Hu and Bentler's (1999) criteria: comparative fit index (CFI) greater than or equal to .95, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) less than or equal to .06, and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) less than or equal to .08.…”

“…Currently, FAS migrants are allowed to enter Guam or the United States without visas under the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which was signed in 1985. Compared to other residents of the island, FAS migrants living in Guam experience disparities such as higher rates of poverty, lower levels of education, less access to health care, and lower socioeconomic status (Hattori-Uchima, 2017).…”

“…Healthcare providers' widespread dismissal of women's pain is still problem in healthcare (Alexander, 2001;Loscar, 2018). Neglect of pain causes unnecessary agony for women (Loscar, 2018), insufficient evaluation of symptoms (Alexander, 2001), resulting in women's sense of being dehumanized (Alexander, 2001), experiencing mistrust in healthcare providers (Hattori-Uchima, 2012;Chipiro-Mupepi, 2001;Reeves, 2018).…”
