Chrono-, litho- and conodont bio-stratigraphy of the Rauchkofel Boden Section (Upper Ordovician – Lower Devonian), Carnic Alps, Austria

Abstract: An updated stratigraphy of the Rauchkofel Boden Section, a classical reference section for the Carnic Alps that exposes rocks from the Katian (Upper Ordovician) to the Pragian (Lower Devonian) is here presented, following latest developments in conodont taxonomy and biostratigraphy, as well as in chronostratigraphy, and the recent introduction of a new lithostratigraphic outline of the Carnic Alps. The original conodont collection of the '70s and ʼ80s was restudied and complemented by a detailed resampling in … Show more

“…However, in the Cellon section at the top of the P. siluricus Zone, a hardground is present, suggesting a short hiatus between the Cardiola and the Alticola formations. This is confirmed by the occurrence of P. latialata (Walliser) in the lowermost bed of the Alticola Formation at Cellon, whereas in other sections in the area (e.g., Rauchkofel Boden: Schönlaub et al, ; Cuestalta: Corradini, unpublished data) the basal beds of this unit still belong to the P. siluricus Zone.…”

“…Conodont‐based Silurian biostratigraphy is well established, and a high‐resolution biozonation has been worked out (Corradini & Corriga, ; Corradini, Corriga, Männik, & Schönlaub, ; Cramer et al, ; Jeppsson, Eriksson, & Calner, ; Männik, ; Schönlaub, Corradini, Corriga, & Ferretti, ; and references in these papers). Due to the sporadic and rare occurrences of biostratigraphically determinative taxa, identification of conodont biozonal units in the Laojianshan section is complicated, and only a few intervals can be dated reliably (Figure ).…”
