ResumoO estudo objetivou verificar as estratégias de enfrentamento de crianças, com idade entre 7 e 12 anos, em situação pré-cirúrgica, e sua relação com variáveis sociodemográficas, presença de estresse na criança, no acompanhante e experiência prévia com cirurgia. Para tanto, 58 crianças internadas para realização de cirurgias eletivas responderam ao instrumento de avaliação das estratégias de enfrentamento da hospitalização e a um questionário de avaliação do estresse. O acompanhante respondeu a um levantamento sociodemográfico e ao inventário de sintomas de estresse de Lipp. As estratégias mais utilizadas foram distração e solução do problema e as menos utilizadas, afastamento social e oposição. Meninas e filhos de pais com estresse usaram significativamente mais estratégias de regulação da emoção. Observou-se maior uso de reestruturação cognitiva em crianças mais velhas e com experiência prévia em cirurgia. Os resultados sinalizam a necessidade de considerar as variáveis estudadas quando da elaboração de programas de preparação cirúrgica. Palavras

Research relating to patients' views of the good nurse has mainly focused on the perspectives of adult patients, with little exploring the perceptions of children. This article presents findings from a qualitative study that explored views of the good nurse from the perspective of hospitalized children. The aims of the study were threefold: to remedy a gap in the literature; to identify characteristics of the good nurse from the perspective of children in hospital; and to inform children's nursing practice. Twenty-two children were interviewed using an adapted 'draw and write' technique. Five themes relating to children's views of the good nurse emerged from the analysis: communication; professional competence; safety; professional appearance; and virtues. Each of these will be discussed in relation to good nurse literature and recommendations made for children's nursing practice.

Being ill from a child's perspective has not been often investigated. The aim of this study was to illuminate the experience of being ill between the ages of 11-18 years. Four girls and one boy who were suffering short-term illness were interviewed and the data obtained subjected to qualitative content analysis. Illness disrupted their daily lives and made things unrecognizable. Being ill at the age of 11-18 seemed to imply being lost, hurt and in need of comfort from themselves and others. These narrations may indicate to health care professionals how they can improve their practice. This study suggests what is appreciated by children of this age when ill, namely being spoken to and informed about the illness and treatment. The children valued peace and quiet and wanted to listen to and adjust to their bodies.
