Chronic Widespread Pain and Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Life-Course Risk Markers in Young People

Abstract: Although the life-course concept of risk markers as potential etiological influences is well established in epidemiology, it has not featured in academic publications or clinical practice in the context of chronic widespread pain (CWP) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Studies of risk markers are required considerations for evaluation of patients and for research because there is no single cause, pathological feature, laboratory finding, or biomarker for CWP or FMS. The early-life risk markers identified by ext… Show more

“…10 Recent pain studies focus on child and adolescent vulnerability as risk factors for non-resilience. 17,53 Addressing risk factors for vulnerability is an important aspect of chronic pain prevention. 17,54 However, in those living with chronic pain, interventions that promote positive adaptation are more effective than addressing risk factors for maladaptive coping.…”

“…17,53 Addressing risk factors for vulnerability is an important aspect of chronic pain prevention. 17,54 However, in those living with chronic pain, interventions that promote positive adaptation are more effective than addressing risk factors for maladaptive coping. 24,46,55 The literature demonstrates that resilient individuals catastrophize pain less and strength-based approaches (e.g., self-compassion, pain acceptance) to coping with chronic pain are essential to long-term resilience.…”
