Chronic tobacco smoking and neuropsychological impairments: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: The link between neuropsychological impairments and chronic tobacco smoking is not clear and in the current literature there is a lack of robust analyses investigating this association. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in order to identify relevant longitudinal and cross-sectional studies conducted from 1946 to 2017. A meta-analysis was performed from 24 studies testing the performance of chronic tobacco smokers compared with non-smokers on neuropsychological tests related to eight different… Show more

“…Interestingly, the dose of nicotine consumed (cigarette per day or pack-years) were not associated with neuropsychological performance in this study, contrasting the main ndings of a recent review conducted by Conti et al (2019), in which several studies included in their review reported a negative link between the number of pack-years and neuropsychological function [2]. This discrepancy in results may be confounded by the considerable variations in the number of pack-years reported across studies (ranging from 4.26 to 73.73) [2].…”

“…The harmful impact of chronic tobacco smoking on physical health is well documented and includes cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and various forms of cancer [2]. Additionally, chronic smoking is implicated in the pathogenesis of neuropsychological dysfunction and has been directly linked to increased risk of depression and cognitive impairment [1,3,4].…”

“…[64], all within the current experimental design and cohort. Performance deficits among cigarette smokers [65] and associated nicotine-induced enhancement manifest in multiple domains, particularly when considering aspects of attention [29]. Whereas nicotine-induced performance enhancement among short-term abstinent smokers represents acute withdrawal reversal, such effects among nonsmokers likely reflects attentional enhancement independent of withdrawal relief [66].…”
