Chronic progressive myelopathy associated with elevated antibodies to human T‐lymphotropic virus type I and adult T‐cell leukemialike cells

Abstract: Six adult patients had a chronic progressive myelopathy that possessed the following features: high antibody titers to human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); predominantly upper motor neuron disorder, symmetrical, with mild sensory and bladder disturbances; and presence of adult T-cell leukemia-like cells in both peripheral blood and CSF. We refer to this entity as HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM). Electrophoretic studies of immunoglobulin G in CSF using Western bl… Show more

“…The mechanism by which myelopathy develops in HTLV-I infection has been studied intensively and several lines of evidence suggest that some immune-mediated mechanism damages the central nervous system (8,9). The characteristics of immunological findings in HAMpatients mimic those observed in autoimmunediseases.…”

“…TSHbinding inhibiting immunoglobulins (TBII) were measured by their ability to inhibit 125I-TSH binding to solubilized porcine TSH receptors (TRAb Kit, RSR Limited, Cardiff, UK) (normal range: <10%). Both the thyroid stimulating antibody (TSAb) and TSH stimulation-blocking antibody (TSBAb) were measured using cultured porcine thyroid cells (24 serum was examined for the first time and found to be positive, i.e., 8,192 xby the passive agglutination method and 1,280 xby the immunofluorescence method. HTLV-Iantibody was also positive in the cerebrospinal fluid ( l ,280x) by passive agglutination.…”

“…Los criterios para hacer el diagnóstico de paraparesia espástica tropical/mielopatía asociada al HTLV-I fueron aquellos descritos por Osame et al (1987) (3). Los individuos con leucemia de células T del adulto fueron referenciados de la historia clínica de remisión como caso de leucemia con diagnóstico serológico positivo para anticuerpos HTLV-I.…”
