Chronic Plaque Psoriasis Is Associated with Increased Arterial Stiffness

Abstract: Background: Patients with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis. Arterial stiffness is a measure of endothelial dysfunction and an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. Objectives: To investigate whether chronic plaque psoriasis is associated with an increased arterial stiffness. Methods: A cross-sectional study on 39 adult patients with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis and 38 control patients with skin disea… Show more

“…Patients with severe psoriasis may have a higher risk of developing ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and NAFLD compared with controls (77)(78)(79)(80)(81)(82)(83)(84)(85). Patients with psoriasis are also more likely to have risk factors for vascular disease (e.g.…”

“…It was concluded that moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis might be independently associated with increased arterial stiffness. Psoriasis duration was thought to be a risk factor for arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis (26). In another study, the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity was found significantly higher in psoriasis patients than in controls, even after adjustment for age, gender, and CV risk factors (27).…”
