1. We assessed the effects of a 26 500 L diesel fuel spill on the macroinvertebrate fauna of a small trout stream in central New York, U.S.A. To determine the spatial extent of the spill we sampled three locations (0.7, 5.0 and 11.8 km downstream of the spill), each containing a reference site (unaffected tributary) and an impact site (downstream of spill). Sampling was repeated four times over a 15‐month period to assess temporal recovery. 2. Immediately after the spill, invertebrate density at all three locations below the spill was significantly lower than reference density. Three months after the spill, density up to 5 km below the spill was still far lower (<100 individuals per sample) than reference density (800–1200 individuals per sample). A year after the spill, density was similar between reference and impact sites, suggesting that invertebrates had recovered numerically. 3. Taxonomic richness up to 5.0 km below the spill was less than half the reference taxonomic richness and this difference persisted for at least 3 months. Some significant differences between reference and impact sites were observed after 15 months, but these differences could not be attributed to the oil spill. 4. For at least 3 months following the spill, the site immediately downstream of the spill was dominated by Optioservus, a petrochemical‐tolerant riffle beetle. Twelve to 15 months after the spill, both the reference and impact sites near the spill were dominated numerically by the mayfly Ephemerella, but the degree of dominance was twice as large at the impact site. 5. We concluded that the diesel fuel spill significantly reduced the density of invertebrates (by 90%) and taxonomic richness (by 50%) at least 5.0 km downstream, but density recovered within a year. Throughout the study, however, the fauna immediately below the spill was species poor and significantly over‐represented by a single dominant taxon, suggesting that 15 months was not sufficient for full community recovery from the oil spill.

Los derrames de petróleo constituyen una fuente importante de perturbación de los macroinvertebrados bentónicos de aguas continentales. Sin embargo, los estudios referentes a estas perturbaciones en las regiones tropicales, y particularmente en el Neotrópico, son limitados. En el presente trabajo se evaluaron los efectos de un derrame de 11 700 barriles de petróleo en las comunidades de macroinvertebrados bentónicos de los ríos Santa Rosa, Quijos y Coca, amazonia ecuatoriana, mediante el uso de índices bióticos, variables de calidad de agua y sedimentos, tanto en sitios impactados como en sitios de referencia en los años 2011 y 2012. Las correlaciones de Spearman establecieron relaciones negativas significativas (p < 0.05) entre la variable “hidrocarburos totales de petróleo” y los taxa Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera (índice EPT), Trichoptera, y la familia Elmidae. Se estableció una relación inversa entre el índice SIGNAL2 con los hidrocarburos totales de petróleo. El procedimiento de permutación de respuesta múltiple determinó una diferencia entre las comunidades de macroinvertebrados de estaciones de referencia e impactadas del año 2011, y entre las comunidades de macroinvertebrados de estaciones de referencia año 2011 y estaciones impactadas año 2012. El escalamiento multidimensional no-métrico implicó usar tres dimensiones, en el cual el eje dos estuvo mejor relacionado con los hidrocarburos totales de petróleo (r = 0.45). Estos resultados sugieren que factores distintos a hidrocarburos totales de petróleo son los responsables de la composición heterogénea de las comunidades de macroinvertebrados.

The portion of the Steepbank River which cuts through the Athabasca oil sands deposit supported a less diverse benthic invertebrate community than did upstream areas. The variety and relative abundance of Plecoptera and Trichoptera were consistently lower in the area of oil sand exposure. As a substrate for benthic invertebrates, oil sand appears to be analogous to bedrock, supporting about 60% as many animals per unit area as adjacent rubble substrates. Burrowing and negatively phototropic organisms were significantly less abundant on oil sand than on rubble. When high discharge of the Athabasca River flooded a riffle to form a pool near the mouth of the Steepbank, rheophilic forms, such as Baetis and Simulium, were largely eliminated from the riffle and benthic standing stocks were reduced by about 50%. The invertebrate community recovered quickly after riffle conditions returned.
