Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is not a risk factor for polyneuropathy: A prospective controlled study

Abstract: Polyneuropathy has been observed in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If polyneuropathy occurs as a complication or extrapulmonary manifestation of COPD, one would expect an increased prevalence among patients with a cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy. This case-control study aimed to investigate the association between COPD and polyneuropathy. We prospectively included 345 patients with cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy and 465 controls. A standardized questionnaire assessed the prese… Show more

“…Another indirect link between ischemia and CIAP consists of the reports of a higher frequency of polyneuropathy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea ( 42 – 46 ). However, in a large case–control study, the prevalence of COPD in CIAP patients was not higher compared to controls ( 47 ).…”

“…In this respect, in stable COPD BE seems to be a marker of long-term distortions of the internal environment that are important for various comorbidities including peripheral neuropathy. Possibly, in this regard BE is superior to spirometric lung function that has not been found to be associated with polyneuropathy if taken as only characteristic of COPD [46]. Metabolic factors, i.e.…”

“…However, in addition to the increased incidence of axonal lesions on our sample of early-stage lung cancer patients and the fact that older people are more likely to determine CIAN, it is interesting to consider whether there is any relationship between the axonal type of neuropathy and lung disease in general. The possibility that a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, based on presumed hypoxia, may lead to the axonal pathology of the peripheral nerves has been refuted so far 26 . In considering the CIAN etiology, special interest is currently focused on disturbed peripheral nerve vasa nervorum microcirculation, which is associated with the metabolic risk factors, but also the diseases of peripheral circulation of the atherosclerotic type 27 .…”
