Chronic inflammatory diseases are stimulated by current lifestyle: how diet, stress levels and medication prevent our body from recovering

Abstract: Serhan and colleagues introduced the term "Resoleomics" in 1996 as the process of inflammation resolution. The major discovery of Serhan's work is that onset to conclusion of an inflammation is a controlled process of the immune system (IS) and not simply the consequence of an extinguished or "exhausted" immune reaction. Resoleomics can be considered as the evolutionary mechanism of restoring homeostatic balances after injury, inflammation and infection. Under normal circumstances, Resoleomics should be able t… Show more

“…Currently available treatments for CIDs involve prolonged use of anti-inflammatory drugs, including non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and immune selective anti-inflammatory derivatives, which have considerable side effects (Bosma-den Boer et al, 2012). A recent review highlighted that current medications used to treat CIDs suppress the symptoms but prevent the complete resolution of the disease, leading to a persistent low grade inflammation.…”

“…A recent review highlighted that current medications used to treat CIDs suppress the symptoms but prevent the complete resolution of the disease, leading to a persistent low grade inflammation. Long lasting use of anti-inflammatory medications is also known to delay full recovery (Bosma-den Boer et al, 2012).…”

“…This immune response invariably results in low-grade, systemic inflammation, which has been termed, "the silent fire", due to its relatively unnoticeable effects on a macroscopic level until it reaches a chronic state [133]. Current studies have found that increased plasma levels of these pro-inflammatory cytokines are increased in the insulin resistant states of obesity and type 2 diabetes [134]. The proliferation of TNF-α in particular has been shown to promote additional pro-inflammatory cytokine release and an associated reduction in anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as adiponectin [135].…”

“…Hence, the genetic polymorphisms that were able to efficiently interact with medical and health care interventions affecting variability in health and longevity are likely to be detectable in genetic association studies of those traits. Several recent publications provide evidence that a balanced diet rich in vitamins and other important nutrients contributes to an increase in individual resistance to stresses [22,23] and, hence, in lifespan and survival. The metabolism of different nutrients may involve genes from different signaling and metabolic pathways [24].…”
