Chronic corticosterone during pregnancy and postpartum affects maternal care, cell proliferation and depressive-like behavior in the dam

Abstract: Stress during pregnancy and the postpartum can influence the well-being of both the mother and her offspring. Prolonged elevated levels of glucocorticoids are associated with depression and we developed an animal model of postpartum depression/stress based on high levels of corticosterone (CORT) during the postpartum. Gestational stress is a risk factor for postpartum depression and prenatal and/or postnatal high levels of CORT may have differential effects on the mother. Thus the present study was conducted t… Show more

“…It is known that prolonged postpartum treatment with high doses of corticosterone results in reduced maternal behavior and hippocampal cell proliferation, leading to depression-like behavior in the dam (8). Although corticosterone levels were not significantly different between LRF Ϫ/Ϫ and WT females during pregnancy (Fig.…”

“…It is known that proper function of the HPA axis is crucial for the onset of parturition and lactation in late pregnancy (18), as well as for milk production and maternal care stimulation (49). During the postpartum period, HPA responses to stress are attenuated (10,55) to benefit the mother by relieving stress and by preventing stress-induced inhibition of lactation and immune function (8,16,60). Currently, factors that regulate postpartum HPA axis activity are unclear (2,44).…”
