Chronic alcoholization-induced damage to astroglia and intensification of lipid peroxidation in the rat brain: Protector effect of hydrated form of fullerene C60

Abstract: We studied the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LP) and the amount of a marker of astrocytes (glial fibrillary acidic protein, GFAP) in tissues of the rat brain under conditions of long-lasting consumption (12 weeks) of ethyl alcohol, as well as the protective effects of peroral administration of hydrated forms of fullerene С 60 (С 60 HyFn, FWS, fullerene water solutions). Consumption of ethanol resulted in a rise in the amount of molecular markers of oxidative stress (thiobarbiturate-active compounds) in the … Show more

“…HyFn display a wide spectrum of biological action both in vivo and in vitro. HyFn given to animals in low doses efficiently protects them from oxidative stress, and formally behave as strong antioxidants [6]. On the other hand HyFn have reducing properties and may serve as electron donors for the dissolved oxygen, exhibiting pro-oxidant activity.…”

“…This is supported by experimental data on the efficacy of a solubilized form of С 60 as a neuroprotective means in morphine and met-amphetamine intoxications [43]. We found in our previous study that introduction of the hydrated form of fullerene to experimental animals within the entire period of alcoholization led to a decrease in the level of oxidative impairments of lipids and proteins in the nerve tissue and promoted recovery of the astroglial function [16]. The neuroprotector effects of hydrated fullerene are, to a considerable extent, based on its ability (even when applied in extralow concentrations) to catalyze reactions of recombination of free radicals in the aqueous phase, i.e., to induce effects typical of the action of superoxide dismutase (SOD).…”

“…In our earlier study [16], chronic exposure to the action of ethanol was shown to induce oxidative stress in tissues of the rat brain and to suppress adequate response of glial cells to the effect of this negative factor. The use of fullerene С 60 applied as aqueous "solution" of its hydrated form (C 60 Fullerene Water System -C 60 FWS) prevented activation of peroxidation processes and promoted the recovery of normal astroglial reaction in the brain of alcoholized animals.…”
