Chromosome Mapping of 5S Ribosomal Genes in Indo-Pacific and Atlantic Muraenidae: Comparative Analysis by Dual Colour Fluorescence In Situ Hybridisation

Abstract: The Muraenidae is one of the largest and most complex anguilliform families. Despite their abundance and important ecological roles, morays are little studied, especially cytogenetically, and both their phylogenetic relationships and the taxonomy of their genera are controversial. With the aim of extending the karyology of this fish group, the chromosomal mapping of the 5S ribosomal gene family was performed on seven species belonging to the genera Muraena and Gymnothorax from both the Atlantic and Pacific oce… Show more

“…An interstitial 5S rDNA position with a diverse location is current, presumably because of a thin inversion. A plus 5S rDNA likely implies the presence of a replication (Coluccia et al 2020). The 5S rDNA site of one parent was either excluded from the chromosome or shifted into gene silencing and then disappeared, which could decrease the 5S rDNA site number (de Melo and Guerra 2003, Volkov et al 2017).…”

“…An interstitial 5S rDNA position with a diverse location is presumed to indicate a thin inversion. A plus 5S rDNA implies the presence of a replication [81]. In addition, the 5S rDNA site of one parent was either excluded from the chromosome or shifted into gene silencing and then disappeared, which could decrease the 5S rDNA site number [82,83].…”

“…Finally, chromosome mapping of major and minor ribosomal gene clusters was applied in a comparative cytogenetic analysis of Muraeinidae, an ancient and poorly studied family. Results unveiled a pattern of ribosomal sequence distribution in contrast to what was generally reported for fishes, showing high variability in the number and location of 5S rDNA clusters, and a tendency to the conservation of the number and location of the 45S rDNA clusters among species [ 22 ].…”
