Chromosome differentiation in the Triturus alpestris complex (Amphibia: Caudata)

Abstract: Several individuals from distinct populations of 7 subspecies included in the Triturus alpestris complex have been analysed to obtain characteristic C-banding patterns. The differences found among the populations as regards the amount, complexity and distribution of heterochromatin bands have been employed to test a pattern of chromosome evolution.Relevant similarities and dissimilarities of these populations are discussed in the light of the tentative evolutionary history inferred from a rooted tree.

“…These paedomorphic populations are also associated with particular taxa: T. a. apuanus and T. a. inexpectatus in Italy, T. a. veluchiensis in Greece and the ‘Yugoslavian’ taxon along the Dinaric Alps (Arano & Arntzen, 1987; Herrero et al ., 1989; Sotiropoulos et al ., 2001). Although French paedomorphic populations belong to the nominate subspecies, their genome is introgressed by apuanus alleles (Breuil, 1986).…”

“…Whereas the nominate subspecies occupies North and East Europe, T. a. cyreni occurs in Spain, T. a. apuanus and T. a. inexpectatus in Italy and T. a. veluchiensis in Greece (Breuil, 1986; Arano & Arntzen, 1987). North Italian and Yugoslavian populations are also most probably differentiated from T. a. alpestris (Herrero et al ., 1989). Paedomorphosis is known in a number of European populations.…”

“…For this purpose, studies on intraspecific chromosomal variation in closely related species is desirable, particularly since small rearrangements would be clearly revealed because of the similar characteristics of chromosome constitution in the groups analyzed. However, the chromosomal differentiation found in the T alpestris complex (Herrero et al, 1989) …”
