Chromosomal Location of Male Fertility Restoring Genes in Six Lines of Common Wheat1

Abstract: A monosomic set of male‐sterile ‘Chris’ (Triticum aestivum L.) with T. timopheevi Zhuk. cytoplasm was used to determine the chromosomal location of Rf‐genes in six male fertility restoring lines (FR‐lines) of T. aestivum L. The six FR‐lines were: R1‐Lee (Nebraska 542437/T. aestivum ‘Lee’), R2‐Sonora 64 (T. timopheevi/2*T. aestivum ‘Marquis’//‘Sonora 64’), R3 (T. timopheevi/3*T. aestivum ‘Marquis’), R4 (amphidiploid T. timopheevi‐Ae. squarrosa/3*T. aestivum ‘Dirk’), R5 (T. Zhukovsky Men. and Er.,/3*T. aestivum … Show more

“…Although alloplasmic common wheats with the cytoplasm of T. timopheevi had showed male sterility (Wilson and Ross, Gill et al (1996). 1962), seven genes controlling restoration of fertility against timopheevi cytoplasm, namely, Rf1 to Rf7 (Tahir and Tsunewaki, 1969;Yen et al, 1969;Bahl and Maan, 1973) were subsequently reported. Among these genes, Rf3 derived from T. spelta var.…”

“…These are the following: (1) Rf1 located on 1A, restoring fertility to T. timpheevi cytoplasm (Yen et al, 1969;Bahl and Maan, 1973), (2) Rfu1 on 1B against Ae. umbellulata cytoplasm (Tsunewaki, 1974), (3) Rfv1 on 1BS against Ae.…”

“…Earlier seven Rf genes have been reported to restore fertility against T. timopheevi cytoplasm (G-type), and their chromosomal locations have been determined, as, Rf1 (1A) (Du et al 1991), Rf2 (7D) (Bahl and Maan 1973;Maan et al 1984), Rf3 (1B) (Tahir and Tsunewaki 1969;Zhou et al 2005), Rf4 (6B) (Maan et al 1984), Rf5 (6D) (Bahl and Maan 1973), Rf6 (5D) (Bahl and Maan 1973) and Rf7 (7B) (Bahl and Maan 1973). In addition, some minor QTLs involved in fertility restoration have also been reported on chromosomes 2A, 2B, 4B, 5A 6A and 7D (Ahmed et al 2001;Zhou et al 2005).…”

“…' This list of cultivars and lines has been compiled from the literature (citation in parenthesis) and also includes additional cultivars and lines identified by the North Dakota State University hybrid wheat program (ND) . 2 These cultivars have been reported to carry a restorer gene on chromosome 1B (3,20) . apparently must be homozygous for fertility expression, and the fertility is first observed in BC1 Fi plants .…”
