Chromosomal abnormality in a phenotypically and clinically normal dog

Abstract: A seven-month-old black female setter-retriever cross was found to have a modal chromosome number of 77 and an apparent centric fusion of two autosomes. Extensive clinical examinations were performed, and the findings were all within normal limits. Similar cases have occurred in man and dogs, suggesting that chromosomal aberration may occur without a change in phenotypic expression and that the presence of congenital disease in dogs with chromosomal centric-fusion may be coincidental.

“…Several reports on chromosomal anomalies in dogs and canine tumors have been published (Shive et al, 1965;Hare et al. 1967;Ma and Gilmore, 1971;Idowu, 1976, Mayr et al, 1990Bartnitzke et al, 1992a, b;Nolte et al, 1993). In addition, international projects are underway that are aimed at producing a high-quality genetic map for the dog genome (Dog Genome Project, DogMap).…”

“…This might account, to some extent, for the remarkable stability seen in the diploid numbers of Felidae and Canidae. Although Robertsonian fusions have been reported in dogs (Ma and G ilmore, 1971;Larsen et al, 1978), the occurrence of such pheno menon in normal individuals is uncommon. were the first to demon strate the presence of NOR on the sex chro mosomes of two species of Seba's fruit bat, Carollia castanea and C. perspicillata, by in situ hybridization of ribosomal RNA.…”

“…The classical form is the reciprocal translocation, which means the exchange of terminal segments between non-homologous chromosomes. At least four diffxent spontaneous translocations (HAGELTORN et al 1973(HAGELTORN et al ,1976LOCNISKAR et al 1976;MADAN et al 1978) have so €ar been described in the domestic pig ( Fig. I C), one single case is known in sheep (GLAHN-LUFT and WASSMUTH 1978) and cattle (MAYR et 21.…”
