Primary neoplasms of the central nervous system have been rarely reported in sheep. A threeyear-old Rasa Aragonesa ewe was admitted to the small ruminant external consultancy at the Veterinary Faculty of University of Zaragoza, Spain. Clinical, haematological and neurological examinations were performed. Neurological examination showed signs of ataxia, hyperextension of the right front limb and abnormal postural reactions. The animal was unable to stand and walk, even with help. Patellar and flexor reflexes were normal and superficial sensation was present but decreased. Humanitarian sacrifice was carried out one month later. Gross and histopathological findings revealed a choroid plexus papilloma located in the fourth ventricle of the brain. To the authors' knowledge this is the first description of this neoplastic disorder in sheep. Clinical presentationA three-year-old Rasa Aragonesa ewe was admitted to the small ruminant external consultancy at Veterinary Faculty of University of Zaragoza, Spain. The affected ewe showed neurological signs. The animal had a 2-week history of progressive ataxia, followed by recumbency, holding the head to the right side (Plate I, Fig. 1).The ewe was kept at the facilities for one month and clinical, haematological and neurological examinations were performed. At examination, the ewe showed normal heart and respiratory rates (105 beats/min and 58 bpm) and rectal temperature was 39 ºC. Haematological indicators retrieved were within the normal range. Neurological examination confirmed signs of ataxia. Hyperextension of the right front limb and abnormal postural reactions were observed. The animal was unable to stand and walk, even with help. Patellar and flexor reflexes were normal and superficial sensation was present but decreased. Post mortem findingsDue to the poor body condition and bad prognosis, the animal was euthanized. A humanitarian sacrifice was carried out with 200 mg pentobarbital sodium (product Dolethal ® , 0.7 ml/kg, Vetoquinol UK Ltd.), and necropsy was performed.

A 14-year-old 80-kg castrated male Huacaya alpaca was evaluated because of a gradual onset of behavioral changes. The owner had perceived decreased feed intake and abnormal behavior during the 7 days before admission. Decreased feed intake had progressed to complete inappetence by 3 days before admission. The alpaca often was separated from the herd and was not observed to lie down on its own. No improvement was appreciated after treatment with tulathromycin before admission (dosage unknown). The alpaca was known to be vaccinated annually for rabies and clostridial diseases and was dewormed regularly (medications, dosage, and frequency unknown).On examination, the alpaca was obtunded and somnolent. Rectal temperature was normal (38.6°C). Heart rate was increased at 92 beats/min and respiratory rate was normal at 16 breaths/min. The alpaca was in good body condition. Mucous membranes were pink and capillary refill time was normal. Peripheral lymph nodes palpated normally. Appetite and gastrointestinal motility were poor. Urination and defecation were not observed during examination. The alpaca was ambulatory but had a tendency to walk compulsively and press its head and body against walls without directional preferences or circling. Cranial nerve reflexes, including menace response, were present and appeared within normal limits. Gait analysis indicated a slow pace with asymmetric hypermetria in the hindlimbs, with the left being more severely affected than the right. Spinal reflexes were difficult to assess but appeared normal. In sternal recumbency, the alpaca would lower its neck and press its nose against the ground. Initial neurologic evaluation localized disease to the prosencephalon.Clinical laboratory tests evaluated at admission included CBC, serum biochemical analysis (SBA), fibrinogen concentration, and blood ammonia concentration. Marked leukocytosis (37,110 cells/lL; reference range, 7,500-20,900 cells/lL), neutrophilia (33,028 cells/lL; reference range, 3,130-15,254 cells/ lL), and a regenerative left shift (band neutrophils, 371 cells/lL; reference range, 0-169 cells/lL) were observed on CBC. Abnormalities on SBA included hyperglycemia (281 mg/dL; reference range, 120-132 mg/dL), increased creatinine concentration (1.9 mg/dL; reference range, 1.4-1.7 mg/dL), hypophosphatemia (2.5 mg/dL; reference range, 4.9-7.2 mg/dL), hypoalbuminemia (3.3 g/dL; reference range, 3.7-4.2 g/dL), increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity (365 U/L; reference range, 106-165 U/L), increased gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity (62 U/L; reference range, 5-20 U/L), and increased creatine kinase (CK) activity (2827 U/L; reference limits, 3-145 U/L). Serum fibrinogen concentration was increased (762 mg/dL; reference range, 100-500 mg/dL). Blood ammonia concentration was normal (16 lmol/L; references range, 0-30 lmol/L). Coexistence of pituitary adenocarcinoma and intraocular melanoma in a sheep

PITUITARY adenocarcinomas and intraocular melanomas are very rare tumours in sheep. This short communication describes the coexistence of both these tumour types in a sheep that also showed lesions of ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma, another more frequently diagnosed neoplasia.A 14-year-old Rasa Aragonesa ewe was presented to the Veterinary Faculty Hospital, University of Zaragoza, Spain, with a history of neurological signs. Its rectal body temperature was 38·5°C, heart rate 102 bpm and respiratory rate 16 breaths/minute. Examination of the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems detected no abnormalities. The animal was very depressed, with reduced conscious proprioception and slow spinal reflexes, and showed a tendency to head press against the walls of the cage. Pupillary light reflexes were reduced on the left side and absent on the right side. Ocular examination of the left eye was within normal limits, but ocular disorders, including microphthalmos and severe enophthalmos with the eyelid detached from the ocular globe, were observed in the right eye. A deeper ocular examination of this eye by ultrasound (HDI 3500 system; Advanced Technology Laboratories) with a high frequency probe, showed an internal mass invading the posterior chamber, and several calcification foci were also evident (Fig 1a).The animal was euthanased due to its advanced age and ongoing deterioration. At postmortem examination, a large neoplastic mass (4·0 mm x 2·5 mm x 3·0 mm) replaced the normal pituitary gland, and compressed the adjacent brain structures (Fig 2). Histopathologically, the mass was composed of neoplastic cells polyhedral in shape, very pleomorphic with a lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. The shape of the nuclei was very variable, but the majority were large and vesiculated. Multinucleated cells were occasionally observed and mitotic figures were very common, as were haemosiderin -laden macrophages (Fig 3a). Internally, the mass had large areas of necrosis, with many haemorrhages and calcified foci evident. The tumour had destroyed the pars distalis of the pituitary gland, and infiltrated the neurohypophysis and adjacent brain structures. These findings were histopathological features strongly suggestive of malignancy (Capen 2002) and the tumour was diagnosed as a pituitary chromophobe adenocarcinoma.
