“…However, their usefulness has been somewhat limited because their antigenic target was not known. We show here that the source of the antigen for a major cohort of these clones is ChgA, a protein found in the secretory granules of pancreatic beta cells and other neuroendocrine tissues 22,23 . We also show that WE14, a natural 14 amino acid cleavage product of ChgA 13 , when presented by I-A g7 APCs, activated the ChgA-specific T cell clones in vitro .…”

“…Gut inflammation could lead to presentation of sequestered self-antigens that are already present in the intestinal tissue. For example, chromogranin A, an islet-antigen that is capable to stimulate the diabetogenic BDC2.5 T cell clone (54), is expressed in the gastro-entero-pancreatic system (55, 56) and, under chronic inflammatory conditions, could be presented to islet-reactive T cells in the intestine. Our data do not support this idea by showing that gut inflammation by itself in DSS- BDC2.5XNOD mice depleted of endogenous microbiota is not capable to activate beta cell autoimmunity.…”

“…Although the use of cryopreserved semen for artificial insemination (AI) has spread worldwide on a commercial basis for cattle (Curry et al 2000), this has not been the case for pigs, where extended semen in liquid form still dominates and !1% of frozen semen is used mostly in genetic nuclei or for export (Eriksson & RodriguezMartinez 2000). Among the reasons for this is the better survival rate, with fertilising capacity intact, of liquid semen that, under farm or farmer AI conditions, provides almost the same prolificacy (number of piglets born) as natural mating.…”
