“…Aldehydes were known to be present in exhaust fumes and, as acrolein is notorious for its lachrymatory properties even in extremely low concentration, it was thought that the eye irritation might have been caused by this substance. Acrolein could not be detected, however, by separating on paper sheets the 2 : 4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine derivatives of aldehydes (Buyske, Owen, Wilder, and Hobbs, 1956) which were collected from bus exhausts on another occasion, although other aldehydes and ketones could be identified readily. The quantities of aldehydes collected in the main experiments were insufficient for such detailed analysis but this work is continuing.…”
