Chromatographic Methods for the Determination of Polyfunctional Amines and Related Compounds Used as Monomers and Additives in Food Packaging Materials: A State‐of‐the‐Art Review

Abstract: Polyfunctional amines are a group of substances commonly used as additives or monomers in food-contact materials. These substances can migrate into foodstuffs and, consequently, may be potentially dangerous for human health. Due to their different chemical structures and physicochemical properties there does not exist a standard method to analyze polyfunctional amines. This review aims to provide an update on the chromatographic methods used for the determination of polyfunctional amines that are commonly used… Show more

“…The p K a increases with an increase in the amine basicity. Table gives p K a values of the five amines used in this work. , On the basis of our knowledge, the amines having a p K a value in the range of 5–9 are mainly tertiary aliphatic species, which are not suitable as a curing agent for epoxies. It appears that p K a > 9 is required for amines to properly react with CO 2 and to generate ammonium carbamate salt powders.…”

“…DPBD belongs to fluorescent whitening agents; Uvitex OB is an optical brightener, both compounds act protecting the colour of plastic materials from adverse environmental conditions and aid to prevent yellowing and discoloration that polymers can suffer from under unfavorable conditions. Benzophenone, is a photoinitiator for UV-cured inks, commonly used for printing the external face of packaging [5].…”

“…In food packaging these resins are usually employed as inner coatings for cans (Paseiro-Losada et al 1998;Simal-Gándara et al 1998;Simal-Gándara 1999;Paseiro-Cerrato et al 2010). Besides, mXDA is one of the monomers (along with adipic acid) of PA MXD-6 (poly(m-xylylene adipamide)), which is a commercial polyamide (Mitsubishi, Japan), used as barrier layer to gases and water vapour (Robertson 2013).…”
