Chromatographic finger print analysis of steroids in Aerva lanata L by HPTLC technique

Abstract: HPTLC profile of steroids has been chosen here to reveal the diversity existing in A. lanata. Such finger printing is useful in differentiating the species from the adulterant and act as biochemical markers for this medicinally important plant in the pharma industry and plant systematic studies.

“…In the last few years, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has become firmly established as a key technological platform for secondary metabolite profiling in both plant and non-plant species 15,16,17 . Gas-Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a helpful technique for reliable profiling of secondary metabolites [18][19] . GC-MS can also be used in airport security to detect substances in luggage or on human beings.…”

“…A large number of plants produce secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, steroids that are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and pesticide industries [16]. Flavonoids have been reported to possess many useful properties, including anti-inflammatory, oestrogenic, enzyme inhibition, antimicrobial, anti-allergic, antioxidant, vascular and cytotoxic antitumor activity [17,18].…”

“…A biomarker on the other hand is a group of chemical compounds which are not unique for that plant material but also correlates with biological efficacy. So, the need arises to lay standards by which the right material could be selected and incorporated into the formulation 11 . Medicinal plants are reported to possess a wide range of properties including anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, antimicrobial, immune modulatory, anti-helminthic, antiviral, and antibiotic activities 12,13 .…”
