Choroidal Oximetry With a Noninvasive Spectrophotometric Oximeter

Abstract: The ODR can be measured noninvasively in the choroidal vessels of lightly pigmented individuals and is significantly lower in choroidal vessels than in retinal arterioles. This may suggest higher oxygen saturation but is also compatible with the reduced contrast of choroidal vessels at both wavelengths that is expected from scattering of light within the choroid. The decrease of ODR during hyperoxia was significant for all vessel types, which confirms that the oximeter is sensitive to changes in oxygen saturat… Show more

“…Furthermore, a higher haemoglobin oxygen saturation level in the vessels of the choroid, when compared with the vessels of the retina, and further rise in that difference with inhalation of 100% oxygen, was demonstrated in vivo in human subjects using a non‐invasive spectrophotometric oximeter (Kristjansdottir et al. ). Unlike the retinal circulation, the choroidal circulation consists of fenestrated blood vessels due to the continuous secretion of VEGF by the RPE cells (Blaauwgeers et al.…”

“…These systems produce automatic oxygen saturation maps, but are limited to retinal vessels. Oximetry of choroidal vessels with the Oxymap T1 can be done for lightly pigmented individuals, but its accuracy needs refinement [13]. Geirsdottir, et al used the Oxymap T1 to demonstrate that oxygen saturation in retinal veins decreases with age in healthy eyes [12].…”

“…Retinal oximetry measures vascular oxygen tension in inner retinal 69 and choroidal vasculature 10 based on hemoglobin oxygen saturation. Phosphorescence lifetime imaging measures oxygen levels using an oxygen sensitive agent that is quenched by oxygen allowing for vascular pO 2 levels to be quantified.…”
