Chorioangiomas – new insights into a well-known problem II. An immuno-histochemical investigation of 136 cases

Abstract: According to this study and the current literature in the field of hamartomas and some neoplasia, we can assume that increased growth factor expression plays a role in the formation of chorioangiomas, since it stimulates proliferation in a wide variety of cell compartments.

“…Large or giant chorioangiomas are often defined as a diameter of detected mass greater than 4 or 5 cm and have an incidence varying from 1:500 to 1:16,000 placentas examined. It is easier to detect larger chorioangiomas prenatally by USG and/or doppler imaging or on routine pathologic examination [2,3]. In our case, chorioangioma diagnosis was initially done by USG and doppler at the 24th week of gestation.…”

“…Although they can be detected in 0.6-1% of placentas with pathomorphological analysis, clinically evident chorioangiomas are rarely seen, with an incidence varying from 1:500 to 1:16,000 placentas examined [2,3]. Usually seen as a single tumor, some of them can present as multiple tumors.…”

“…Only fifty percent are detected during prenatal period. 5 Moreover, its incidence rises with maternal age and is more prevalent in multiple gestation. Also, there are more female babies with angiomas in their placenta.…”

“…Also, there are more female babies with angiomas in their placenta. 5 Chorioangioma is thought to arise by day16 of fertilization, although there is no documentation of tumor in first trimester. HPE is consistent with a benign angioma arising from chorionic tissue.…”

“…Histologically they appear as a group of grossly enlarged intermediate and terminal villi that are not demarcated by a fibrous capsule but are simply surrounded by otherwise normal villous tissue [1] . CA occur in 0.6-1% of pregnancies at term [2] . Mainly they are isolated, microscopically small and without clinical significance.…”
