Choosing a Water Distribution Pipe Rehabilitation Solution Using the Analytical Network Process Method

Abstract: One of the major challenges faced by water companies around the world is the high level of water losses in distribution networks. This research paper presents a case study on the choice of the best technical solution for the rehabilitation of the water distribution network pipelines of Cluj-Napoca City, Romania. The analytical network process (ANP) method was used as the selection method, and calculations were performed using the Super Decisions 2.6.0 software. In the case study, five alternatives were analyze… Show more

“…The core of the analytical network process is the supermatrix, which depicts the influence and relationships between the elements in the network on other elements. The analytical network process comprises progressive creation of three supermatrices as shown in the following steps [32,33]. In the first step, the unweighted supermatrix is formed based on computing the local priorities and Eigen vectors according to the entries of the pairwise comparison matrices.…”

“…This allows SWS to plan and schedule the replacement and rehabilitation of the asset program efficiently as well as effectively so that the right assets can be replaced, repaired, and rebuilt in a timely manner. Thus, the real-time monitoring of asset status could be regarded as indicators of preventive maintenance and predictive replacement to prolong the assets' life cycle and cost savings [74][75][76].…”

“…The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Analytic Network Process (ANP), two traditional Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, were developed by Tomas Saaty [50][51][52] to organize and analyze complex decision problems. A matrix of judgments on the relative preference between each pair of alternatives/sub-alternatives is obtained by pairwise comparison [53,54]. Finally, the relative importance of each decision criterion is identified.…”
