Choosing a qualitative data analysis tool: a comparison of NVivo and Leximancer

Abstract: As the use and availability of qualitative software analysis tools increases so does ambiguity regarding the choice of the most appropriate software in sport management research. This paper uses NVivo and Leximancer to analyse the same set of data derived from interviews with sport management experts on high performance sport to showcase the differences in findings depending on the type of software used. The findings alert sport management and social science researchers to the importance of closely examining t… Show more

“…Leximancer derived concept identification has exhibited high face validity, high reliability and reproducibility and thematic clustering without facing the biases associated with manually coded text analyses (Smith & Humphreys, 2006). It is found to be superior to other approaches, such as NVIVO, particularly when the goal is to quickly discover key themes and the relationship between concepts (Sotiriadou, Brouwers & Le, 2014).…”

“…Additionally, codes and subcodes can be connected by using relationship nodes, which facilitates the organisation of data into groups of codes (Franzosi, Doyle, McClelland, Rankin, & Vicari, 2013). Nvivo is particularly advantageous in studies that use small samples and semi-structured interviews (Sotiriadou, Brouwers, & Le, 2014), which is the case of this research. Moreover, Nvivo was a valuable resource for this research because it can be used to validate and refine a priori models (Bandara, 2006).…”

“…The focus group transcriptions were imported into Nvivo 11.0 for thematic analysis [15]. NVivo helps a researcher to manage and organize the data and facilitates the process of analysis, identification of themes, collecting insights and developing conclusions [16].…”
