Chondrosarcoma of the chest wall: Single-center experience

Abstract: surgery for chondrosarcoma can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality. Proper selection of patients and radical en-block excision of the tumor are the keys for successful treatment and better outcomes.

“…As fine-needle aspiration cytology is not proper because of local dissemination risk, wide surgical excision with tumor-free margins (en bloc, R0) is the mainstay of therapy for rib chondrosarcoma (6). Furthermore, lung is the most common metastasis site of chondrosarcoma (7). Although PET/CT might be the most reasonable choice for preoperative staging of this patient, it was expensive.…”

“…Chondrosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of the thoracic cage and is usually located in bony tissue developing through the endochondral ossification process (1,3). These malignant neoplasms may arise as lesions in previously healthy bone tissues or develop in preexisting benign chondral tissue tumors, such as enchondromas (1).…”

“…At most, the reported incidence is only 500 new cases per year in the United States (1). Primary bone tumors of the thoracic cage are relatively rare, representing up to 4-8% of all non-secondary, non-metastatic bone neoplasias (2,3). Most chest wall bony tumors demonstrate malignant behavior and the most common primary malignancy is chondrosarcoma (1-4).…”

“…2 If preparation is executed on a separate table, as most studies described, contouring is achieved by using the lateral thigh or flank as a mold. 19 Though obtaining a less authentic configuration, this method minimizes risk to local structures during the solidification process. To date, no study has investigated associations between preparation method and complication rates, thus deferring to surgeon experience and proficiency.…”
