Chondroma of the Bladder: An Atypical Localization

Abstract: Chondroma is a benign tumour of mesenchymal origin that is composed of cartilage and rarely located in soft tissues, being described so far only in four cases, as located in the bladder, according to our knowledge. We describe the fifth case of a 67-year-old woman who consulted for microscopic haematuria, with an endoscopic finding of submucosal nodular image in the anterior wall of the bladder, which after resection and the histologic study shows cartilage and fibroconnective tissue, in part hyalinised, and p… Show more

“…Cystoscopic examination revealed a whitish submucosal mass with a smooth, well-defined surface. Interestingly, all bladder chondromas reported to date were located at the anterior wall or bladder dome [2][3][4][5][6][7] (Table 1). Transurethral resection is an effective management strategy for bladder chondromas, and no recurrence has been reported following this procedure.…”

“…[1] Extraskeletal soft tissue chondromas are extremely rare, and only 6 cases of bladder chondroma have been reported previously. [2][3][4][5][6][7] Bladder chondromas may cause urinary symptoms, abdominal pain, or hematuria. We report the case of a 75year-old woman in whom bladder chondroma was discovered incidentally and managed by transurethral resection.…”

“…Soft tissue chondromas identified in all locations are usually diagnosed in the fourth to seventh decades of life and have been noted to occur in both men and women with equal frequency 8. Soft tissue chondromas have been reported in pelvic organs including the prostate, scrotum and testis; however, there have only been five reported cases of soft tissue chondroma of the bladder 2–6 8…”

“…All published cases of soft tissue chondroma of the urinary bladder have occurred in women in their fifth to seventh decades with the lesion identified at the anterior wall of the bladder in four cases and at the ventral dome of the bladder in one case 2–6. All cases of soft tissue chondroma of the bladder have been diagnosed during the investigation for abdominal or pelvic pain or lower urinary tract symptoms 2–6. A single reported case of soft tissue chondroma of the bladder was identified in a patient with a recent diagnosis of high-grade urothelial carcinoma of the bladder 3.…”
