Chondroitin Sulfate‐Depolymerizing Activity in Streptococcus intermedius and Other Streptococci

Abstract: The type strain (ATCC 27335) and 18 human oral isolates of Streptococcus intermedius and some other related streptococcal species were tested for chondroitin sulfate C-depolymerizing activity employing a modified screening plate method of Smith and Willett. As the results, S. intermedius strains except for ATCC 31412 strain were found to possess this activity. Propionibacterium acnes ATCC 11828 used as a positive control strain demonstrated strong activity, whereas S. intermedius strains showed only slightly d… Show more

“…The chondroitinase of P. acnes ATCC 11828 was much more active than that of S. intermedins OE-1 and the activ ity was not detected in S. mutans OZ-1 or strain Ingbritt (serotype c) [Osano et al, 1987]. If the enzyme did work in the affected dentin, alcinophilic areas which appeared af ter proteolytic digestion of proteoglycan in the dentin ma trix must have decreased or diminished because of degra dation of chondroitin sulfate(s).…”

“…S. intermedius OE-1 was isolated from supra gingival plaque from a sound tooth of one of us using the method of Tanaka [1988] and identified according to the VPI manual [Holde man et al, 1977], The strain was serologically classified into the same scrogroup as strain ATCC 27335 [Osano et al. 1990], P. acnes ATCC 11828 possessed chondroitinase activity [Osano et al. 1987],…”

“…Production of ribonuclease, deoxyribonuclease, gelatinase, chondroitin sulfatase and collagenase has been demonstrated in 5. m///<?n Steffen, 1981;Osano, 1987;, but protein and lipid-degrading activities were not found . Hyaluronidase activity was observed mainly in 8-haemolytic strains .…”
