Chondroblastoma: Radiofrequency Ablation—Alternative to Surgical Resection in Selected Cases

Abstract: Percutaneous RF ablation is an alternative to surgery for treatment of selected chondroblastomas. Larger lesions beneath weight-bearing surfaces should be approached with caution due to an increased risk of articular collapse and recurrence.

“…However, they found radiographic severity and symptom levels as factors that predicted total joint arthroplasty. Because arthritis occurred in more than half of our patients with proximal femur lesions, one might consider alternative approaches such as radiofrequency ablation and grafting through a more limited approach [13,19]. Despite careful surgical dislocation with attention to preserving the epiphyseal vessels, the femoral head sphericity was not retained in many of our patients and that incongruence of the ball and socket resulted in symptomatic hips needing a second surgical procedure [2].…”

“…In combination with systemic chemotherapy, the survival of patients with stage 2b tumor disease was thereby significantly improved. In addition to individual case reports in the literature such as the treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts or giant cell tumors, when pain is in the forefront of symptoms, percutaneous ablation can additionally be employed in the palliation of primary bone tumors, analogously to the treatment of bone metastases [50].…”

“…There has been extensive experience of RFA in the adult liver but limited publications in pediatrics [37]. RFA is specifically indicated to ablate unresectable liver lesions and painful bone tumors [38]. Bone tumor ablation has two specific advantages over radiotherapy.…”

“…Bone tumor ablation has two specific advantages over radiotherapy. Pain relief from RFA is immediate [38] and RFA can target lesions in a more localized fashion than standard radiotherapy.…”
