Organophosphates and synthetic pyrethroid pesticides are used in residential areas and agriculture, discharge into environment, may cause unpredictable toxicity to non-targeted aquatic organisms. The current study aims to assess the effect of these pesticides on the transaminases, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase enzymes activity in brain and gills of Oreochromis niloticus. Fish were exposed for 24 and 48 h (hours) to the LC0 (non-lethal concentrations) of the malathion, chlorpyrifos and λ-cyhalothrin, respectively. For biochemical assay, a spectrophotometer was used. Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase activity in brain and gill was significantly (p <0.05) elevated and inhibited, respectively, except in 48 h treated samples. The highest (+258%) and lowest (+8.9%) enhancement in this activity was noted in chlorpyrifos and malathion treated gill samples, respectively. The glutamate pyruvate transaminase activity was significantly (p <0.05) enhanced in all treated samples except in 24 h malathion treated brain. The highest (+340.7%) and lowest (+27%) enhancement in this level was recorded in malathion and chlorpyrifos exposed brain and gills samples. Therefore, it is suggested that both these assessments in fish different organs could be used as a useful biomarker to detect environmental pollution. Thus, the alterations in transaminases activity indicated that the tested pesticides are highly toxic to the health of aquatic organisms and should be periodically and regularly monitored in the environment to reduce pollutant stress on non-target biota, particularly fish.

Background: Investigating the metabolic interactions between parasites and their hosts is essential for advancing our understanding of parasitology, with significant implications for both animal and human health. This study focuses on cestode parasites in domestic pigeons as a model for such interactions. Objective: The objective was to analyze the cholinesterase and cholesterol levels in various cestode species found in domestic pigeons, shedding light on their metabolic functions and implications for broader health concerns. Methods: The study involved collecting specimens of Raillietina galeritae, Cotugnia Streptopell, and Raillietina flaccida from infected domestic pigeons. These specimens were processed through grinding, homogenization, and centrifugation. Cholesterol levels were measured using an enzymatic colorimetric method, and cholinesterase levels were determined through a spectrophotometric assay, involving specific reagents and incubation protocols to ensure accurate biochemical analysis. Results: The cholinesterase levels exhibited minor variations among the species, with Raillietina flaccida recording the highest mean value at 0.817 µ moles/ml, followed by Raillietina galeritae at 0.795 µ moles/ml, and Cotugnia Streptopell at 0.783 µ moles/ml. The cholesterol measurements revealed more pronounced differences, with Cotugnia Streptopell showing the highest level at 432.220 mg/dl, Raillietina galeritae at 231.746 mg/dl, and Raillietina flaccida the lowest at 133.333 mg/dl. Conclusion: This research highlights the metabolic diversity within cestode parasites and emphasizes the need to understand the unique characteristics of individual species. The variations in cholinesterase and cholesterol levels suggest complex metabolic adaptations. These findings offer valuable insights for developing targeted treatments for parasitic infections and underscore the importance of species-specific approaches in both veterinary and human parasitology.

Bifenthrin is broad spectrum type I pyrethroid insecticide, used broadly for agricultural and urban purposes, yet very little is reported about its biodegradation. Five fungal strains named Aspergillus niger (Asp-N), Aspergillus flavus (Asp-F), Aspergillus fumigatus (Asp-Fu), Penicillium chrysogenum (PC) and Lasiodiplodia theobromae (LD) were utilized to degrade bifenthrin for 35 days incubation time. PC is found to be extremely effective in degrading Bifenthrin up to 85%. Furthermore, response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken design is applied to optimize the degradation conditions with varying pH, temperature (℃) and incubation time (days). The response surface design and analysis of variance depicted the p-value below 0.05 indicating the significance of reaction parameters. The optimal ranges for degrading BF (10 mg/L) by PC were determined to be 30 oC, pH-7 and 24-days incubation period. This fungal strain co-metabolized BF in eutrophic condition within glucose rich medium. The PC degrade BF by hydrolytic cleavage of carboxyl-ester linkage as chromatogram obtained by GCMS with four metabolites. This research provides new insights into the biodegradation of BF by strain Penicillium chrysogenum (PC).
