Cholesteatoma: a disease of the poor (socially deprived)?

Abstract: Cholesteatoma is a condition describing the accumulation of squamous epithelium and keratinocytes within the middle ear space. There is conflicting evidence regarding the influence of socioeconomical status on the prevalence of cholesteatoma. Hospital episode statistics (HES) data detailing the numbers of cholesteatoma surgeries performed per area were compared with the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 (IMD 2010) data that give a statistical measure of deprivation per local health authority in the UK. “…Khalid-Raja et al analysed hospital episode statistics data to estimate that, over the four selected years between 2005 and 2012, an average of 5074 patients underwent operations for cholesteatoma per year. 16 Using the same Office of Population Censuses and Surveys Classification of Interventions and Procedures codes, 4635 patients had similar surgery in 2019. 17 These patients are routinely followed up for a number of years; therefore, clinical surveillance can represent a significant burden in otology clinics.…”

“…While the relative publication rate of cholesteatoma and OME is declining, these diseases continue to impact patient quality of life and carry a significant financial burden [11,12]. Given the financial burden of these common maladies and the increasing prevalence, more opportunities for future research could be placed on prevention, diagnostics, and treatments that would help lower costs [11,12,13].…”
