“…The lack of a homogenous definition of cholera especially in an endemic setting such as Nigeria made the direct comparison of our findings with similar studies challenging. For example, studies in Nigeria have used 5 years [12, 17, 40], 2 years [21, 41, 42], and no age restrictions [14, 19] for the definition of suspected cholera cases. Thus, this challenge should be prioritised by the GTFCC given the relevance to cholera case management and assessment of cholera burden, which would be strategic in the objective assessment of the global roadmap goals of cholera elimination by 2030.…”

“…Ongoing conflicts, including the 14-year conflict with Boko Haram and the increasing violence from highly sophisticated criminal gangs in the Northwest and Northcentral regions, have devastated communities across Northern Nigeria [13]. These conflicts have caused significant public infrastructure damage and displaced millions of people [13][14][15][16]. Such forced relocations often lead to regions with scarce water resources, exacerbating the competition for water and its scarcity.…”

“…In addition, movement restrictions imposed by authorities in response to these conflicts potentially hinder people from leaving their homes to source water [6]. These interlinks undoubtedly influence cholera outbreaks in the region, contributing to a dramatic increase in the number of recorded cases in recent years [13][14][15][16].…”
