Cholelithiasis – a particular threat to women. A review of risk factors

Ivanna Lazarchuk,

Slawomir Wozniak
et al.

Abstract: In Poland, cholelithiasis affects approximately 20% of the population and require approximately 45.000 cholecystectomies per year. Women, especially mature women, are more at risk of developing this condition. Hormonal and reproductive factors are the reason for higher incidence in women. In this publication, we review significant factors affecting this situation. The anatomical structure of the gallbladder may have a significant impact on the course of the cholecystectomy, and the occurrence of any intra- or … Show more

“…The cross-sectional design, while effective for determining prevalence, does not allow for conclusions about causality between diabetes and gallstone disease. Additionally, the study was confined to a single geographic area, which might limit the generalizability of the findings to other populations (17)(18)(19). Further research is recommended to explore the causal relationships in a longitudinal framework, which could provide insights into the progression of gallstone disease over time in diabetic versus non-diabetic individuals.…”

“…The study's implications for clinical practice are significant, suggesting that diabetic patients, particularly those experiencing right hypochondriac pain, should be considered for routine gallstone screening. This could potentially lead to earlier detection and management of gallstone disease, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing the healthcare burden associated with complications of untreated gallstones (17)(18)(19)(20).…”

“…With this said, a 6-month post-operative period is not adequate to assess morbidity. The patient is a female of reproductive age (40 years old) who is at risk for further gallstone formation [ 4 ].…”
