Cholangiocarcinoma: a guide for the nonspecialist

Abstract: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a tumor with increasing prevalence around the world. The prevalence of CCA is highest in East Asia and most significantly in the countries through which the Mekong River flows, owing to the presence of liver flukes, which are consumed in raw fish dishes. Outside Asia, the causes of bile duct cancers for the most part are unknown. In this review, we assess the current state of knowledge in both fluke-associated and sporadic CCA, from etiological, diagnostic, and treatment perspective… Show more

“…Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the most common biliary tract primary malignancy and the second most common liver malignancy following HCC, worldwide [97]. Asia has more CCA patients than other regions, but the prevalence of CCA is increasing in North America and Europe [98]. CCA tumors are categorized into intrahepatic (iCCA), perihilar (pCCA), and distal (dCCA) subtypes [99].…”

“…CCA is a malignancy of the cholangiocytes in the biliary tree . It accounts for 10%–20% of all hepatic cancers, and PSC is the most common risk factor . CCA often goes undetected until the later stages of life, most often discovered between 70 and 79 years of age, as most signs and symptoms are absent .…”

“…CCA often goes undetected until the later stages of life, most often discovered between 70 and 79 years of age, as most signs and symptoms are absent . If the CCA tumor is large enough to block bile flow, symptoms such as jaundice, pruritus, and/or pale stools may be seen . Those with CCA will also have the same micronutrient concerns as those with PBC and PSC.…”

“…1,4 The typical clinical symptom of ECC is features of biliary obstruction including jaundice, pale stool, dark urine and pruritus. [5][6][7] The diagnosis of ECC is based on clinical manifestation, blood test, imaging, and histology and cytology. 5 Imaging is the main diagnostic method for ECC, including ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).…”
