Choices Women Make: Agency in Domestic Violence, Assisted Reproduction, and Sex Work. By Carisa R. Showden. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2011. 312p. $75.00 cloth, $25.00 paper.

Abstract: from general ideal theory to institutional form is too big for one essay, or even one book. Perhaps it is better to keep general theory and institutional details apart. General theory can provide a background, but the specific mechanics of institutions and how they interact with responsibility, welfare, or equality are questions that cannot be regarded as instantiations of general theory.

“…To conclude, in order to choose from different options and fashion their lives in accordance with their aims and wishes, individuals need conditions that enable them to do so (Showden, 2011), such as conditions that guarantee their access to participation. Despite being attentive to the role of conditions, it is highly important to keep in mind that people living with dementia are not passive recipients of support but are individual persons and actors in society with their own abilities, interests and rights (Nedlund et al, 2019).…”

“…Women's agency is intertwined with culture, including societal expectations, obligations, norms and control. Under the effect of such factors, they may often feel constrained and not agents in the full sense (Showden, 2011;Sorial and Poltera, 2015). More specifically, their actions are deeply influenced by their social interactions, which in turn are mediated by unbalanced formal and informal power relationships.…”
