Chlortetracycline and related tetracyclines: detection in wheat and rye grain

Abstract: Concentrations of tetracyclines found in wheat and rye grains were of no concern with respect to toxicity regarding human consumption. However, antibiotic concentrations below the minimum inhibitory concentration can select for antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Thus, low levels of different tetracycline residues contained in food should be taken into account regarding risk assessment. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…However, the discrepancy of administered AMG and the presence in blood is an important concern [72]. Thus, emergence of AMG-resistant bacteria is a pressing concern due to its abuse in animal husbandry and agricultural practices [73][74][75]. One of the important AMG is Streptomycin, an effective antibiotic for gram-negative bacterial treatment and is used not only for human diseases but also for diseases of veterinary concern [76,77].…”

“…Due to their beneficial antimicrobial properties and the fact that they do not cause any serious side effects, tetracyclines are widely used in the treatments of both human and animal infections [ 127 ]. The most frequently mentioned antibiotics belonging to the group of tetracyclines are chlortetracycline [ 128 ], tetracycline [ 129 ], oxytetracycline [ 130 ], doxycycline [ 131 ], and minocycline [ 132 ]. Drugs from this group are used for treatment of acne and rosacea, as well as for urinary tract infections, Lyme disease, and nonspecific respiratory-tract infections [ 133 ].…”

“…However, the substantial variation between the administered AMG antibiotic dose and variations in the resultant levels in the blood is of great concern . The negative impact of antibiotic residues in food and water has also received worldwide attention due to their abuse in animal husbandry and agricultural practices . This global scenario has emerged as a pressing concern owing to the evolving multi‐drug resistance observed for bacteria .…”

“…2 The negative impact of antibiotic residues in food and water has also received worldwide attention due to their abuse in animal husbandry and agricultural practices. 3,4 This global scenario has emerged as a pressing concern owing to the evolving multi-drug resistance observed for bacteria. 5 There is thus an urgent need to develop novel assays with high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of AMG antibiotics in water and food samples.…”
