A B S T R A C TThe tools that evaluate the salinity effects on plants have great relevance as they contribute to understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance. This study aimed to evaluate gas exchanges and the contents of photosynthetic pigments in bell peppers cultivated with saline solutions (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 dS m -1 ) prepared using two sources: NaCl and a mixture of Ca, Mg, K, Na and Cl salts, in randomized blocks with a 6 x 2 factorial scheme and 4 replicates, totaling 48 experimental plots. The net photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), internal CO 2 concentration (Ci), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency (A/Ci) and water use efficiency (WUE), besides chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids were evaluated. The gas exchange parameters were efficient to indicate the effects of salinity. All photosynthetic pigments decreased with increased electrical conductivity, and the chlorophyll a is the most sensitive to salinity, while the water use efficiency increased with the increment of electrical conductivity.Trocas gasosas e pigmentos fotossintéticos em pimentão irrigado com água salina R E S U M O As ferramentas que avaliam os efeitos da salinidade nos vegetais apresentam grande relevância uma vez que contribuem para compreender os mecanismos de tolerância. Objetivou-se avaliar as trocas gasosas e os teores dos pigmentos fotossintéticos em pimentão cultivado com água salina (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 e 9 dS m -1 ) elaboradas de duas formas: NaCl e uma mistura de sais de Ca, Mg, K, Na e Cl. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com arranjo fatorial 6 x 2, com 4 repetições totalizando 48 parcelas experimentais. Foram avaliadas a fotossíntese líquida (A), a condutância estomática (gs), a transpiração (E), a concentração interna de CO 2 (Ci), a eficiência instantânea de carboxilação (A/Ci) e a eficiência do uso da água (EUA) além da clorofila a, clorofila b e carotenoides. Os parâmetros de trocas gasosas foram eficientes para indicar os efeitos da salinidade. Todos os pigmentos fotossintéticos reduziram com o aumento da condutividade elétrica sendo a clorofila a de maior sensibilidade à salinidade enquanto a eficiência do uso da água aumentou com a elevação da condutividade elétrica. A B S T R A C TChlorophyll a fluorescence is a very useful tool in ecophysiological studies to analyze the photosynthetic performance of plants under biotic and abiotic stresses. This research aimed to evaluate the parameters of the fluorescence of chlorophyll a, contents of chlorophyll a, b and total, and carotenoids in Atriplex nummularia cultivated under water stress (37 and 70% of field capacity) and salt stress (irrigation water with electrical conductivity of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 dS m -1 ), besides two sources of salts: NaCl and a mixture of salts of Ca 2+ , Mg +2 , K + , Na + and Cl -, in a 6 x 2 x 2 factorial, with 4 replicates, totaling 96 experimental plots. At 91 days after transplanting, the initial fluorescence (F 0 ), maximum fluorescence (F m ), potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II (F v /F m ), F v /F 0 ratio and the contents of chlorophyll a, b, and total and carotenoids were determined. All assessed parameters decreased as a standard response to salt stress, except F 0 , which had, as a characteristic, the increase in its values under stress conditions. The emission parameters for Atriplex nummularia varied with the type of salt present in the irrigation water.Fluorescência da clorofila a e pigmentos fotossintéticos em Atriplex nummularia sob estresses abióticos R E S U M OA fluorescência da clorofila a é uma ferramenta de grande utilidade em estudos ecofisiológicos para a análise da performance fotossintética de plantas sob estresses bióticos e abióticos. Objetivou-se avaliar os parâmetros da fluorescência da clorofila a, teores de clorofila a, b e total e carotenoides em Atriplex nummularia cultivada sob estresses hídrico (37 e 70% da capacidade de campo) e salino (água de irrigação com condutividade elétrica de 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 e 40 dS m -1 ), além de duas fontes de sais: NaCl e uma mistura com sais de Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + , Na + e Cl -, em fatorial 6 x 2 x 2 com 4 repetições totalizando 96 parcelas experimentais. Aos 91 dias após o transplantio foram determinadas a fluorescência inicial (F 0 ), a fluorescência máxima (F m ), a eficiência quântica potencial do fotossistema II (F v /F m ) e a razão F v /F 0 e os teores de clorofila a, b, total e carotenoides. Os parâmetros de emissão avaliados reduziram como resposta padrão ao estresse salino, com exceção do F 0 que tem, como característica, o aumento de seus valores quando em condições de estresse. Os parâmetros de emissão para a Atriplex nummularia variaram de acordo com o tipo de sal presente na água de irrigação. To elucidate effect of chemical reagents addition on growth of aquatic plants in restoration of aquatic ecosystem, Spirodela polyrrhiza (L.) Schleid was used to evaluate its physiological responses to excess iron (Fe 31 ) and copper (Cu 21 ) in the study. Results showed that accumulation of iron and copper both reached maximum at 100 mg L 21 iron or copper after 24 h short-term stress, but excess iron and copper caused plants necrosis or death and colonies disintegration as well as roots abscission at excess metal concentrations except for 1 mg L 21 iron. Significant differences in chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) were observed at 1-100 mg L 21 iron or copper. The synthesis of chlorophyll and protein as well as carbohydrate and the uptake of phosphate and nitrogen were inhibited seriously by excess iron and copper. Proline content decreased with increasing iron or copper concentration, however, MDA content increased with increasing iron or copper concentration. # 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
