2 Chlorophyll meter (SPAD) readings can play an important role in selecting promising lines for wheat breeding. Twenty five durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) genotypes were grown under irrigated and rainfed conditions at two locations in Diyarbakir, Turkey during 2005 and2006. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation in SPAD readings, and to determine relationships among SPAD readings, grain yield, grain quality and yield parameters. SPAD readings were taken at heading and grain middle milky stages. SPAD readings exhibited greater genotypic variance compared with grain yield and protein content. Genotype by environment interaction variance did not associate with SPAD readings and, grain yield. At both measuring stages there were positive correlations between SPAD and grain yield. Correlation analysis revealed that grain yield under both rainfed and irrigated conditions was mostly determined by grain number. These results suggest that SPAD readings can be used as selection criteria to select durum wheat genotypes that are high yielding but without any decrease in grain protein content.

Plant parameters associated with adequate nutritional nitrogen status of cabbageCorrect management of cabbage fertilization can be achieved by synchronizing the plant demand with N supply during the crop cycle. The objective of this study was to evaluate the evolution of nutritional parameters intensity of green color (SPAD index) taken on the fourth fully expanded leaf, N content, stem length, number of leaves, and fresh and dry matter weights to diagnose nitrogen status of cabbage and determine the critical value of each parameter at different assessment times. At 50, 64 and 78 days after sowing, the intensity of green color (SPAD index) measured on the fourth leaf, stem length, number of leaves, fresh and dry matter weights and N content in the leaf dry matter were determined. Five N rates (0, 75, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha -1 ) were evaluated. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Last harvest of cabbage heads was at 103 days after sowing. Optimal values of variables over cabbage cycle depended on N rates and time of evaluation. Optimal SPAD values were 60.8, 58.4 and 53.5 at 50, 64 and 78 days after sowing respectively. Optimal values of N content were 62.9, 60.3 and 59.0 in the leaves, 48.6, 40.6 and 40.3 in the stem and 39.9, 36.9 and 20.1 in the roots.

A chlorophyll meter can conveniently estimate foliar chlorophyll and nitrogen (N) contents in many species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of a chlorophyll meter to inform nitrogen fertilization rates of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) at different places and times. Plot-scale (5 × 20 m) experiments with three replications were conducted in 2010. Each plot was treated with 248 kg pure N ha -1 per year as urea. At the same time, a field-scale (32 ha) experiment, with the same fertilization rate, was conducted at the same plantation. Tea leaves were sampled in August and November and analyzed with a chlorophyll meter in situ and in the lab. The chlorophyll and nitrogen contents and chlorophyll meter (SPAD) readings of tea leaves in August were greater than in November, and plot-scale values were greater than field-scale values. SPAD readings could estimate the chlorophyll content of tea leaves regardless of temporal and spatial considerations. However, space and time must be considered when using SPAD readings to estimate the nitrogen content of tea leaves.
