Chlorophenols as Precursors of PCDD/Fs in Incineration Processes:  Correlations, PLS Modeling, and Reaction Mechanisms

Abstract: Emissions of organic chlorinated compounds from municipal waste incineration, in particular polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), have been a cause of public concern for many years because of the high toxicity of these compounds. PCDD/F formation in incineration processes is being studied widely using labscale apparatus, but pilot-plant investigations are quite rare. The correlation between TEQ-related PCDD/Fs and chlorophenols (ClPhs) was studied here using a pilotscale plant. T… Show more

“…They concluded that polychlorinated dihydroxybiphenyls and ortho-phenoxyphenols were the key intermediates in the formation of PCDFs from chlorophenols. It should be emphasized, however, that the reaction pathway involving condensation of chlorophenols via dioxaspiro intermediates mainly leaded to the formation of PCDDs (Tuppurainen et al, 1998(Tuppurainen et al, , 2000, while PCDFs are probably involved other precursors such as polychlorinated biphenylethers (PCBEs) and polychlorinated phenylphenols (PCPPs). Qualitative analysis of some compounds was performed to further study the pathway of PCDD/Fs formation.…”

“…Chlorophenols (ClPhs) are structurally closely related to PCDD/Fs and thought as important precursors for PCDD/Fs formation (Dickson and Karasek, 1987;Milligan and Altwicker, 1996). Some mechanisms of PCDD/Fs formation from ClPhs as precursors have been reported (Weber and Hagenmaier, 1999;Tuppurainen et al, 2000). Among the possible precursors for the formation of PCDD/Fs, it seems that PCP has the highest potential to generate PCDDs (Altwicker and Milligan, 1993;.…”

“…2005.04.020 magnitude greater than PCDD/Fs in incinerator effluents and CPs concentrations were a factor of 5 larger than PCDD/Fs, although yields varied from incinerator to incinerator. In addition, PCDDs formation was strongly related to CPs concentration (Tuppurainen et al, 2000;Stanmore, 2002). Dickson et al (1992) found that PCDD/Fs formation from model precursor compound pentachlorophenol (PCP) was 72-99000 times greater than that from carbon via de novo mechanism.…”
