Chlorogenic acids from Tithonia diversifolia demonstrate better anti-inflammatory effect than indomethacin and its sesquiterpene lactones

Abstract: CAs from T. diversifolia comprise a good pool of anti-inflammatory compounds with better activity mechanisms than NSAIDs, other active compounds from the leaf extracts (STLs and flavonoids) and CAs from other plant sources. Thus, the PE of T. diversifolia has high potential for the development of new anti-inflammatory phytomedicines. The infusion probably contains antagonists, and therefore it can be useful to treat inflammation processes where neutrophil recruitment is involved and oedema is not.

“…Rutin, chlorogenic, and caffeic acids were quantified in the extract (Boligon et al, 2013). Furthermore, antiinflammatory effects of three indicated components have been reported (Chagas-Paula et al, 2011;Gamaro et al, 2011;Selloum et al, 2003). Therefore, these phenolic components in the pant could play an important role in its anti-inflammatory activity.…”

“…Many classes of secondary metabolites which are isolated from the Tithonia diversifolia extracts include diterpenoids, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones ( Figure 5) and chlorogenic acids derivatives [54] [55]. However, the most abundant terpernoids in Tithonia diversifolia are sesquiterpene lactones [55].…”

“…It shows cytotoxic [19], anti-inflammatory [33], and antifeedant activities [2], and thus is a promising compound for further research into its mechanisms of action in different targets. T. diversifolia, the source of 1, is used in folk medicine in many countries [8,14] and has anti-inflammatory and antimalarial properties [8]. However, there remains concern regarding the ingestion of STLs because of their toxicity [35].…”
