Chlorination vs. fluorination: a study of halogenated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-based organic semiconducting dots for near-infrared cellular imaging

Abstract: The chlorinated dots based on chlorinated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole unit possess higher fluorescence quantum yields, larger Stokes shifts, and better photostability than the fluorinated dots.

“…The HOMO energy can be lowered down to −6.80 eV, which was observed for CDs with an oxygen rich surface [ 55 ]. A similar effect on the HOMO energy was observed for CDs via doping with halogen atoms [ 71 ]. For more details on CD synthetic procedures, interested readers are referred to the recent reviews [ 72 , 73 , 74 ], including syntheses of pH-sensitive [ 8 ] and metal-doped [ 75 ] CDs.…”

“…Two new fluorescent BTD derivatives, BTD‐ClBT and BTD‐ClClBT (Figure 3), [88] were used as dyes in encapsulated nanodots and applied as bioimaging probes. Both systems were capable of efficiently transposing the plasmatic membrane of the cells and were found dispersed in the cytosol.…”

“…In principle, although these structures shown in Figure 3 [81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88] are not good candidates to be applied as bioimaging agents, the results obtained from the tests of these molecules may allow for the development of more selective BTDs which could, in turn, be applied as selective cell-imaging probes, as will be disclosed in the next sections of this article.…”

“…[ 140 ] In ref. [ 90 ] , it was shown that HOMO level of CDs could be shifted down to –5.51 and –5.43 eV by using Cl − and F − containing precursors, respectively, due to their strong electron‐withdrawing ability lowering the frontier orbital energy levels.…”
